My laptop has been dead for a little over a week now and I think the worse of the withdrawals are over. I'm pretty sure the only reason I've managed to survive thus far is because I have all day to be on the desktop in the office, so by the time Nate comes home, I've got all my emailing, blogging, researching done and I can hang out in the living room with him. Well, except for the time that he then spends in the office, checking email and doing whatever it is he needs to do.
I shudder to imagine what life will be like once I go back to work in a few weeks. Then we'll both be fighting for desktop time in the evenings and there will be no more blogging during commercial breaks on the couch (my prime blogging time!). Although we've discussed replacing the deceased party, someone doesn't quite seem to share my sense of urgency on the matter.
Of course, this hasn't stopped me from researching the heck out of shiny new laptops. I've never had to purchase one on my own (Dead Dell was my old work laptop that I got as part of my severance) and I am completely floored by the sheer number of options and decisions to be made. 2GB, 4GB, 6GB. i3, i5, i7. Screen size. Screen resolution. Touch screen. Touch pad. Memory. Hard disks. Bits. HOLY COW.
So I'll do the only thing I know to do. Which is ask you. What laptop do you use? What do you like about it? What do you hate about it? What would you do differently if you had to purchase one again?

I'm with you on the "buy a Mac" spiel. Uh...sure. You got an extra two thousand dollars laying around? I don't.
I got a Compaq Presario CQ60 from Best Buy for my birthday in February and I love it. The only cons I have with it are that it's heavy (about six pounds) and the battery doesn't last long (maybe two hours, depending on screen brightness, etc.). But I really have no complaints. And it was only about four hundred dollars in all.

I'm no help. My laptop is ancient but it allows me to surf the internet. I use the desktop for everything else.
How about compromising with a netbook? Cheaper anyway.
My laptop was the same price as a Netbook of comparable memory, etc., and with a much bigger screen. :)
I have a MacBook. Yes, they are more expensive but I have definitely found that it has been money well spent. Just my opinion.
I have a macbook. I know that other people have mentioned the price but when I got mine it was a 1,000 dollars and I thought it was a bit pricey. Now that I've had it since 2007 and never had one single problem, the money was WELL worth it!
My macbook pro was $1200 in April. It replaced a 3 year old PC. The 3 year old PC replaced a mac laptop from 2002- which is still going strong for its third owner.
But not everyone likes Macs. Some people don't want to deal with their well loved keyboard shortcuts being slightly different, or whatever. Personally I don't mind either but they way Macs work seem more intuitive to me.
Another thing to consider is what platform the company you work for uses. If you work on something at home and then have compatibility issues- MAJOR frustration.
I just spent a fortune on a MacBook Air. And you know what? Totally worth it. My Dell sucked a**
